OPEN DAY

We are recruiting for new members!  Join Us on SATURDAY 24 FEBRUARY AT 3pm.

Bare Cheek Theatre Company formed County Wexford Youth Theatre in September 2003 with the invaluable support of Wexford County Council. To date CWYT has had over 1,500 members.  Currently there are 50 members aged between 11 years and 23 years, divided into three groups.  The groups meet each Tuesday and Friday for 1.5 hours per group during school term time and stage at least four productions each year.  CWYT is a member of Youth Theatre Ireland.

In production, the Youth Theatre over the past few years has been quite prolific.  Tackling plays by Shakespeare, Caryl Churchill, Claire Dowie, Heiner Muller etc.  The members are also quite prolific in writing their own work and contributing text in devised work e.g. Rate Me, Missing, Anya, The Elephant In The Room, Revolt, Dog Days Are Over, Good Kids Drink Milk etc.

CWYT has produced many young artists over the years for example; Charlie Murphy (Actor), Clodagh Mooney Duggan (Actor), Stephen Morris (Visual & Performance Artist), Ailsinn O’Byrne (Actor), Martina Kavanagh (Stage Manager), Ceara Daly-Carney (Actor) and many more.  Part of the youth theatre’s mission to equip members with the skills and education to be able to confidently move on to the next level of their theatre and performance training.  Over forty members have moved on to work professionally and study at third level in the performing arts.

CWYT is not just there for the aspiring actor or theatre maker.  Many members move on to other professions and other non-arts related study.  These members are equally important to us as the training is generic and enhances the member’s social skills, self-esteem and self-worth.  It enables the young people to speak with confidence and clarity in social and business settings and probably most importantly of all teaches that they do have a voice and that their opinions matter.

The ethos of CWYT is that we are dedicated to providing a creative and social space for young people to meet and express themselves through the medium of theatre in an unthreatening and safe environment. By striving to maintain a level of professionalism in its productions, CWYT incorporates the discipline of theatre and the excitement of a social outlet, offering members a valuable, educative and fun experience. CWYT is responding to a need of young people in County Wexford, providing a creative outlet in the form of acting workshops, theatre productions, training opportunities and social interaction.

The aspirations of CWYT are: to provide for the personal and social development of its members through participation in drama workshops and productions and to attain a high artistic standard in the public performance of plays, which includes work relevant to the lives of these young people today.

Members are encouraged to involve themselves in every stage of the theatre making process, gaining key leader and organizational skills. CWYT has an emphasis on fostering emerging young Irish talent.

CWYT is supported & funded by Wexford County Council and the Arts Council.
